Banana bread is one of my favorite things to meal prep for the week. It's basically like having a mini coffee shop in your kitchen where you wake up to a thick slice of homemade banana bread! Not to mention, it's a great grab and go breakfast too! This Orange Chocolate Banana Bread is one of my favorite flavor combos. There's something about orange zest that brings me back to childhood. It could have been a pastry I used to eat that had some orange infused, I don't know exactly. But I do know that this vegan banana bread is a delight and must make! I hope you enjoy!
Orange and Chocolate Flavor Profile
Chocolate and orange bring out the best in each other. The natural sweetness from the orange zest compliments the bitterness of the dark chocolate chips. It's a flavor combo of citrus, bitterness, and the sweetness from the ripe bananas and maple syrup round this flavor combo!
Choosing The Right Banana
Crafting this banana bread begins with the choice of bananas. Go for the super ripe ones, their skins speckled with black, promising natural sweetness and a perfect moist texture to the bread. These bananas minimize the need for added sweeteners, allowing just a hint of maple syrup to elevate the richness without relying on refined sugars.
How Is This Orange Chocolate Banana Bread Vegan?
This banana bread is a testament to the beauty of vegan baking, showcasing how flaxseed acts as an excellent egg substitute, binding the ingredients with its natural gelatinous quality when mixed with water.
The secret to its tender crumb lies in the vegan buttermilk. It's easily made by combining almond milk with apple cider vinegar and letting it sit for about 10 minutes. This simple step introduces a light tanginess while ensuring the bread rises to fluffy perfection.
