My mom is from Spain, which meant Churros y Chocolate was a staple in my house growing up. Whenever my Yaya came to visit, she knew they were my favorite and made them in the mornings. The recipe for the churros has always been vegan in my family, but has never been done in the air fryer! I'm semi-terrified of oil from a frying pan popping up, so I wanted to see how good churros would be in the air fryer. I loved these!
Any good churro needs to have a thick chocolate dipping sauce. For this one, I just used dark chocolate chips and coconut milk, when combining over heat it thickens to a perfect consistency. I hope you love these!!
The Churro
Back in the day in Spain, shepherds would fry strips of dough. They'd then coat them in sugar and carry them as a portable snack through the mountains. They called them churros because the shape was similar to the horns of the Navajo-Churro sheep breed.
Making the churro dough is so simple. All you need to do is boil your liquids (water and a bit of oil) then once it's boiled, turn the stove off and quickly add in your dry ingredients (flour, salt, sugar).
It will form and elastic ish ball. Once it's shaped, allow it to cool before piping into the classic churro shape.
The Chocolate
For me, I can't have churros without chocolate. For this recipe to make it vegan, I used full fat coconut milk and chocolate chips. Whisk them together over heat until they're combined into a thick and creamy dipping sauce.
Deep Fry vs. Air Fry
These churros are air fried for a few reasons. 1. I don't love the amount of oil waste in frying food. 2. I am terrified of oil splattering all over when frying food. 3. It's healthier and an air fryer still gives churros the desired crispy texture. So basically, it's a win, win, win!
Churros y Chocolate
Ingredients
Churros
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup boiling water + 1 tbsp
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon coconut sugar
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil
Chocolate
- 2.5 oz chocolate melted
- ⅓ cup coconut milk full fat
Instructions
- In a pot over medium high heat, add your water and oil then boil. Turn off heat then add your flour, salt, and sugar and mix until combined. Mix with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula until it forms into an elastic ball.
- Let it cool for 5-10 minutes.
- Take a plastic bag cutting a hole on one corner or use a piping tool and transfer your churro mixture inside.
- Pipe your churros to be a few inches long in your air fryer (or pipe on a plate then transfer to your air fryer)
- Spray some avocado oil on top of the churros then put them in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes at 400F (depending on the size of your piping tool) I did 10 minutes for ¾ inch churro width. Depending on the size of your churros you may need to air fry for an additional minute or two to get them to be golden brown.
- While they’re air frying, heat your coconut milk/cream chocolate until fully melted and combined.
- Serve your churros with a dusting of sugar if you’d like, or dip into the rich chocolate and enjoy!
