These vegan animal style fries are an ode to a California staple. The In-N-Out animal fries! They are a perfect balance of crunchy, saucy, nutty from the carmelized onions, and gooey from the non-dairy cheese!
In-N-Out Animal-Style Sauce
I embarked on a quest to recreate the goodness that is the In-N-Out Animal-Style Sauce that they put on some fries and burgers. I made it without refined sugar and using vegan mayo so it's a healthier version. It's still delicious and incredibly saucy! It's a MUST have for any burger night (and you can use it to dip your fries in!)
Caramelized Onions & Cheese
The key to these fries, besides the sauce, is the caramelized onions and non-dairy cheddar cheese. Traditionally, animal fries are made with American cheese. However, I don't love the taste or texture of American cheese. So, I subbed non-dairy cheddar. If you're not vegan or dairy-free, you can use whatever cheese you'd like! The cheese adds a gooeyness to it. For me, I don't think the cheese is necessary, but it's great if you like cheese!
The caramelized onions, chopped finely, are a magical powerhouse that amps up the flavor. It provides a rich, sweet, and silky smooth addition to the crispy fries, gooey cheese, and saucy thousand island esque sauce.
I hope you enjoy!
